Students accepted into the program will be able to earn a certificate in instrumental conducting in addition to their degree in music (performance, composition, or music education). This thorough program is designed for highly talented students hoping to pursue a professional and/or academic career in conducting. Students are expected to be self-motivated, diligent, and hard-working, and remain in excellent academic standing. They will have the opportunity to conduct full-size orchestras, chamber orchestras, and operas, and frequently work with guest conductors in masterclasses and lessons.

• equipping them with a thorough and healthy approach to conducting technique (gaining clarity and expressiveness by releasing unnecessary tension)
• developing and refining their rehearsal techniques
• training them in running all administrative and artistic aspects of an orchestral program
• instructing them on how to teach conducting in a non-ideological, healthy, and sensible way
• instilling the importance of informed decision-making through thorough musicological research, score study, and analysis
• sharpening their conductor-specific musicianship through targeted ear training, score reading, and repertoire survey
• placing a strong emphasis on positive and consistent leadership and responsibly engaged citizenship
